Sarah Colburn

Associate

Background:

Sarah Colburn is an Associate Attorney at McConaughy & Sarkissian, P.C. in Denver, Colorado, where she practices in family law and domestic relations. Her areas of focus include divorce, legal separation, child custody and parental responsibilities, parenting time, child support, and common law marriage. Ms. Colburn brings to her family law practice something few attorneys in this field can offer, multiple years of active courtroom experience as a prosecutor, in her six years as a Deputy District Attorney in the Denver metropolitan area — one of the busiest and most demanding DA’s offices in Colorado.

During her time as a prosecutor, Ms. Colburn handled cases across the full spectrum of criminal severity, from misdemeanors to the most serious felonies. She developed a particular depth of experience in domestic violence cases — representing the state in the prosecution of offenders, advocating for victims, and gaining a firsthand understanding of the long-term consequences that abuse and family dysfunction inflict on individuals, children, and households. This experience directly shapes how Ms. Colburn approaches family law: she understands how domestic violence intersects with divorce and custody proceedings, how to identify and articulate patterns of coercive control, and how to advocate effectively for clients whose voices have historically gone unheard in the legal system.

Ms. Colburn transitioned to family law to channel that advocacy into the civil arena, where she now represents clients navigating the most consequential decisions of their lives: the dissolution of a marriage, the determination of where children will live, and the restructuring of family finances. She approaches each matter with a clear-eyed understanding of when negotiation and settlement serve her client’s best interests and when the situation calls for the kind of direct, confident courtroom advocacy she built over six years as a trial attorney.

Ms. Colburn earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. She has been licensed to practice law in Colorado since 2017.

Outside the office, Ms. Colburn is as driven in her personal life as she is in the courtroom. She is an avid motocross rider, street biker, powerlifter, and whitewater rafter. When she is not seeking her next adrenaline rush, she enjoys traveling with her partner and spending time with her cats.
